System Basics
How often should I perform maintenance?
A quick 5 to 10-minute check once a week is usually enough to keep the system healthy and prevent most common issues before they start.
What should I do if the water level is low?
Always ensure the reservoir is full enough to keep the pump completely submerged. Top it up with fresh water, then check and adjust your nutrient levels to reach your target PPM/TDS.
When should I perform a full water change?
It is recommended to do a complete reservoir refresh every few weeks. This prevents “salt buildup”—a concentration of minerals that can block nutrient uptake or damage plant roots over time.
Nutrients & Water Quality
What are the ideal nutrient levels (PPM/TDS)?
Nutrient strength should increase as your plants grow:
- Seedlings: 300 – 400 PPM
- Vegetative Stage: 400 – 600 PPM
- Harvest Stage: 600 – 700 PPM
- Fruiting Plants (Tomatoes/Chillies): These require higher strength, often reaching 1,200 – 1,500 PPM during the fruiting stage.
Why is the pH level important?
If the pH is too high or too low, your plants cannot “eat,” even if the water is full of nutrients. Aim for a pH range between 5.5 and 6.5 for optimal growth.
What if my leaf tips look burnt?
This is often a sign of “nutrient burn.” If your TDS readings are too high, simply dilute the reservoir with a bit of fresh water to bring the levels back down.
Plant Health & Troubleshooting
How do I check for pests?
During your weekly check, look closely at the undersides of the leaves and the stems. Catching insects early makes organic treatment much more effective.
What do healthy roots look like?
Healthy roots are firm and white or light tan. If roots appear brown, slimy, or have a bad odor, they may be suffering from root rot and should be pruned immediately.
How can I prevent algae growth?
Algae thrives on light and nutrients. Keep your reservoir covered, wipe down any damp plastic surfaces, and remove dead leaves that fall into the water.
Hardware Care
How do I maintain the pump and nozzles?
Listen for any unusual grinding or vibrating sounds from the pump. Periodically check the nozzles for visible clogs or mineral debris to ensure every plant in the system receives a steady flow of water.
Should I move or rotate my system?
If your system is a tower design, rotating it slightly once a week ensures that all plants receive an equal amount of light, preventing lopsided growth.
